Just an hour before Turki Al-Sheikh’s proposed takeover was expected to be completed, the Saudi official reportedly pulled the plug — leaving Derby County facing an uncertain future once again.
The deal had already cleared a major hurdle after receiving approval from the Independent Football Regulator. Derby were prepared for a new chapter. Then, almost without warning, everything changed.
Chief executive Stephen Pearce described the feeling as “the wind being taken out of our sails.”
For owner David Clowes, the collapse represents another extraordinary twist in Derby County’s recent history. Since taking control, Clowes has worked to stabilise the club, including clearing a £20 million high-interest loan and continuing to invest heavily in the playing squad.
Even while knowing that his ownership could eventually come to an end, Clowes continued backing the team during the summer transfer window.
Bobby Clark reportedly arrived for around £6 million, while David Ozoh cost approximately £4 million, among other investments.
His commitment to Derby has been significant.
But the failed takeover could have consequences beyond the ownership headlines.
Plans surrounding the stadium and training ground are now facing uncertainty, while the club’s financial position remains an important consideration. Derby’s most recently published accounts recorded an £11.3 million loss, while staffing costs reportedly reached 105% of revenue.
Then there is the situation on the pitch.
The Rams have endured a difficult start to the league campaign, suffering five defeats in their opening seven league matches. Late collapses have added to the frustration, while pressure surrounding manager John Eustace has continued to grow.
For supporters who briefly imagined a completely different future under new ownership, the collapse is particularly difficult to absorb.
Expectations had risen. A new era appeared to be approaching.
Now, Derby County are seemingly back at the starting point.
David Clowes deserves recognition for the work he has done to stabilise the club, but the reality is that Derby’s future suddenly appears much less certain than it did only weeks ago.
