DORTMUND FACE HUGE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TEST – AND A SENSATIONAL RETURN COULD BE ON THE HORIZON!
Borussia Dortmund have made an emotional and promising start to their new Champions League campaign. The Black and Yellows defeated Villarreal 3–2, showing impressive character, particularly after the break. However, the victory was overshadowed by a worrying incident, while attention is already turning toward a potentially spectacular return.
Playing in front of their home supporters, Dortmund suffered an early setback when new signing Konstantinos Karetsas had to leave the pitch after experiencing circulation problems. He was taken from the field on a stretcher and subsequently brought to hospital for further examinations. The club later indicated that he was doing well under the circumstances.
Despite the incident, Niko Kovač’s team refused to lose focus. After a goalless first half, Dortmund came out with greater intensity after the interval. An own goal from Renato Veiga gave Dortmund the lead before Serhou Guirassy struck twice to put the home side in a commanding position. Villarreal managed to pull another goal back, but Dortmund held on to secure an important 3–2 victory.
The Return That Could Change Everything
One of the biggest sources of optimism is the situation surrounding Nico Schlotterbeck. The Germany international has been working his way back from a serious ankle injury and has returned to individual training. However, there is still no confirmed date for his full comeback.
His return would be a major boost for Kovač. Schlotterbeck offers not only defensive stability but also experience, leadership and composure. Those qualities could prove particularly valuable during difficult Champions League nights.
For now, however, Dortmund must rely on the players available to them. The squad possesses plenty of attacking quality, with Guirassy providing a major threat in front of goal, while Jobe Bellingham and Joey Veerman offer creativity and energy in midfield. Young players such as Ethan Nwaneri also give the team additional pace and attacking options.
A Warning Despite the Victory
The 3–2 victory should not hide the fact that Dortmund were vulnerable at certain moments. This is where the real challenge of the Champions League begins. Against stronger European opponents, defensive mistakes could be punished much more severely.
Kovač will therefore have to find the right balance between attacking ambition and defensive discipline. Dortmund have made an important statement with their victory, but their European journey is still only beginning.
The team now has the opportunity to build on that momentum. Dortmund’s next Bundesliga fixture is a home match against SC Paderborn on September 12, followed by an away meeting with VfB Stuttgart.
For Dortmund, the season could ultimately become a special story: a serious Champions League challenge, a striker in excellent form and the growing hope that an important defensive leader could return at the perfect time.
If Schlotterbeck can eventually regain full fitness, his comeback could provide Kovač’s side with exactly the extra quality and confidence they need for the biggest European nights.
