Leeds United are now very close to staying in the Premier League, and they even have a chance to climb higher on the table. Their strong 3–1 win over Burnley on Friday night made fans at Elland Road chant “we are staying up,” and it’s easy to understand why. Leeds are now nine points ahead of Spurs and seven points clear of West Ham.
But Leeds are not just thinking about survival—they are also looking up the table. The win briefly pushed them above Newcastle and put them level on points with Crystal Palace. Both teams have 43 points, but Palace had a slightly better goal difference before their next match.
After Palace lost, Leeds moved just above them into 14th place on goal difference. However, Palace still have one extra game to play, which is against Manchester City.
Finishing higher than 17th place is not only about pride. There is also good money involved. The Premier League pays clubs based on where they finish, so moving up even one position can bring in more cash. For example, if Leeds move from 15th to 14th, they could earn about £2.7 million more. Last season, the difference between finishing 17th and 14th was about £7.9 million.
So, ending the season as high as possible would not only prove manager Daniel Farke’s critics wrong, but also help the club attract better players in the future.
