On July 15, 2025, the West Virginia Mountaineers secured a significant addition to their 2026 recruiting class with the commitment of SirPaul Cheeks, a dynamic running back from Varina High School in Chesterfield, Virginia. Standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing 185 pounds, Cheeks is a versatile athlete known for his explosive speed and playmaking abilities.
Cheeks, affectionately nicknamed “Jesus in Cleats,” chose WVU over offers from Kentucky, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech, and several other programs. His decision followed an official visit to Morgantown in mid-June, which solidified his comfort with the coaching staff and the program’s direction.
During his junior season, Cheeks amassed 1,495 all-purpose yards and 18 touchdowns, showcasing his ability as a rusher, receiver, and return specialist. He also contributed defensively with six interceptions, three of which he returned for touchdowns.
Cheeks’ athleticism extends beyond the football field; he is also a standout track athlete, recording personal bests of 10.62 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 21.45 seconds in the 200-meter dash.
His commitment adds depth to WVU’s 2026 backfield, joining fellow running backs Jett Walker and Christopher Talley. Cheeks’ multifaceted skill set and athletic prowess position him as a valuable asset to the Mountaineers’ future offensive schemes.
