Tulsa needs an identity.
It’s possible to win at one of the smallest schools in the FBS, but there has to be a style, a differentiation, something that makes the Golden Hurricane a factor it was in the mid-2000s.
35-year-old Tre Lamb comes in from East Tennessee State after an okay season following a 20-20 record in four years at Gardner-Webb, but he was able to reboot both programs and improve them quickly.
No, he doesn’t have some sort of a gimmicky attack to expect an instant burst, but his teams run well, they get to the quarterback, and they play defense.
All of that would be a change at Tulsa after three straight losing seasons with too many games without a running game, pass rush, or consistent D.
There’s little returning talent – the transfer portal took away most of the top guys – but Lamb loaded up with a slew of FCS playmakers to go with the few decent starters still around.
It’ll be a rough building-back season, but it’s a chance for the new coaching staff to do what it wants.
