In a remarkable act of compassion and leadership, Texas A&M head football coach Mike Elko has pledged his entire $10.5 million in performance bonuses to establish the Aggie Haven Youth Shelter in College Station, Texas. This initiative aims to provide safe housing, educational support, and life skills training for homeless youth across the state.
Elko’s journey from humble beginnings—growing up in a trailer park in South Brunswick, New Jersey—to becoming a prominent figure in college football has deeply influenced his commitment to giving back. His firsthand understanding of hardship fuels his dedication to supporting vulnerable youth.
The Aggie Haven Youth Shelter will transform a 15,000-square-foot property into a facility accommodating up to 50 young individuals aged 12 to 18. The shelter will offer counseling, tutoring, job training, and recreational spaces. Partnerships with local schools will ensure residents receive comprehensive educational support.
Elko’s initiative has garnered widespread community support. Texas A&M President Mark A. Welsh III described it as “a game-changer,” emphasizing the shelter’s potential to address the needs of over 7,000 homeless youth in Texas annually. Players from the Aggies football team have also volunteered to support the project, highlighting the program’s culture of service.
Collaborating with YouthReach Texas, a nonprofit specializing in aiding at-risk youth, Elko ensures the shelter will provide not only safety but also equip young people for brighter futures. Renovations for the shelter are already underway, with completion expected by late 2026. Elko’s commitment extends beyond this project; he has also donated his entire one-year contract extension and a $250,000 bonus to local charities supporting the homeless.
