John Henson’s Shocking UNC Admission: “I Wanted to Go to Texas”
For over a decade, North Carolina basketball fans have remembered John Henson as one of the most dynamic forwards to ever suit up in Carolina blue. Known for his long arms, shot-blocking ability, and consistent impact in big moments, Henson became a key figure in UNC’s success during his time in Chapel Hill. But in a surprising revelation, the former Tar Heel star admitted that his legendary career in the ACC nearly never happened—because he originally wanted to play somewhere else.
In a recent interview, Henson shared that his heart was set on the University of Texas before ultimately choosing North Carolina. Growing up in Texas, the Longhorns represented home, familiarity, and a chance to play in front of family and friends. “For me, I wanted to go to Texas,” Henson confessed. “I was a Texas kid. My dad was like, ‘You’re trippin’, it’s North Carolina. You’ve got to at least give them a chance.’”
