Michael Bishop Comes Home: Former K-State Star QB Joins Coaching Ranks
Manhattan, KS – In a move that has energized the Kansas State football community and brought back waves of nostalgia, former Wildcats quarterback Michael Bishop has officially returned to the program—this time, not as a player, but as a senior member of the coaching staff.
Bishop, who led Kansas State to national prominence in the late 1990s, remains one of the most electrifying and beloved figures in the school’s football history. Now, over two decades later, he’s back in Manhattan, looking to guide the next generation of Wildcats from the sidelines.
“It’s like coming home,” Bishop said in his introductory press conference. “Kansas State has always been in my heart. This place changed my life, and now I’m ready to give back and help build something special with this new group of athletes.”
Bishop’s return is more than symbolic. The former Heisman Trophy finalist brings a deep understanding of the game, a proven record of leadership, and a passion for developing young talent. He joins Head Coach Chris Klieman’s staff with the goal of bolstering the Wildcats’ offensive development, particularly in mentoring quarterbacks—a position he knows better than most.
Michael Bishop’s playing career at K-State is the stuff of legend. In 1998, he led the Wildcats to an 11-0 start, a No. 1 national ranking, and a Big 12 Championship Game appearance. That same year, he passed for over 2,800 yards, rushed for more than 700, and accounted for 28 touchdowns, earning second place in Heisman voting behind Texas’ Ricky Williams. His dual-threat abilities helped reshape what was expected from college quarterbacks and left an indelible mark on Kansas State’s football legacy.
After a stint in the NFL and a successful career in the Canadian Football League, Bishop turned his attention to coaching. Over the past few years, he has worked with high school quarterbacks and trained rising stars in private camps, developing a reputation as a passionate and effective mentor.
His return to K-State was met with immediate enthusiasm from fans, alumni, and current players.
