Coach Klieman Kicks Off Preseason with First Camp Press Conference
Kansas State head football coach Chris Klieman officially signaled the start of the 2025 season with his first preseason camp press conference on Monday. Standing at the podium inside the Vanier Football Complex, Klieman spoke candidly about the Wildcats’ expectations, player development, health updates, and the hunger fueling this year’s squad.
“It’s great to be back,” Klieman opened. “There’s a lot of energy in the building, and I think the guys are ready to attack this camp with purpose.”
Coming off another strong season, Klieman acknowledged the rising expectations in Manhattan. With a solid returning core, talented newcomers, and fierce competition across the Big 12, the Wildcats enter 2025 with aspirations that go beyond conference contention.
Position Battles & Leadership
Klieman emphasized the importance of leadership in camp and the need for experienced voices to set the tone. Veteran quarterback Avery Johnson is expected to lead the offense, and Klieman praised his offseason growth.
“Avery’s been outstanding in the film room, weight room, and with his command of the huddle. He’s growing into a real leader,” Klieman said.
The coach also noted that several position battles are heating up, particularly along the offensive line and in the secondary. Klieman welcomed the competition, saying it elevates the team’s overall intensity.
“We have depth, and that’s something you always want. Guys know they’ve got to bring it every day.”
Injury Updates
Klieman provided updates on key players dealing with injuries, including offensive tackle George Fitzpatrick, whose status had been under question.
“George is progressing well. He’s not quite full-go, but we’re optimistic,” Klieman shared. “Our training staff has done a great job getting everyone on track. We’re being smart about workloads.”
Newcomers Impressing Early
Several incoming freshmen and transfer players have made early impressions. Klieman highlighted a few who could push for early playing time, especially on special teams and depth roles.
“There’s a hunger in that freshman class. A few of those guys are already showing they’re not afraid of the spotlight,” he said. “We’ll see who separates themselves as camp goes on.”

With Kansas State coming off back-to-back bowl appearances and a Big 12 Championship in 2022 still fresh in fans’ minds, the program continues to aim high. Klieman noted that maintaining a championship mindset requires consistency and accountability.
“We don’t talk about results. We talk about habits,” Klieman said. “If we keep stacking good days, the rest will take care of itself.”

As preseason camp ramps up, Klieman and his staff are focused on setting a strong foundation—mentally, physically, and schematically. The first press conference of the season was filled with optimism and a clear message: this team is hungry, focused, and ready to put in the work.
“There’s nothing better than football in Manhattan in the fall,” Klieman concluded. “We’re just getting started.”
