Pittsburgh HC Says North Carolina ‘Better Be’ in ACC Title Game with Bill Belichic
In one of the most surreal moments of the 2025 college football preseason, Pittsburgh head coach Pat Narduzzi sent shockwaves through the ACC media circuit when he declared, “If Bill Belichick’s coaching North Carolina, they better be in the ACC title game. No excuses.”
The statement, delivered half-jokingly but with unmistakable intensity during the ACC Media Days in Charlotte, underscored the heightened expectations surrounding the Tar Heels after their headline-making offseason. In a move that stunned the sports world back in February, legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick took the helm at UNC, accepting a rare challenge: rebuilding a storied college program in the twilight of his coaching career.
“Listen,” Narduzzi continued, pausing for effect. “We’re talking about the greatest football mind alive. You put him in Chapel Hill, give him ACC talent and an NIL war chest, and yeah—they better be in Charlotte come December.”
Belichick, notorious for his terse press conferences in Foxborough, hasn’t said much publicly since the move. But his fingerprints are already all over the program. Sources within the Tar Heels’ camp say he’s implemented a pro-style offense that mirrors his early-2000s Patriots schemes, and he’s brought in NFL-level analytics staff to overhaul recruiting and game preparation. His staff includes several former NFL assistants and even a few of his ex-Patriots players, like linebacker Jerod Mayo and defensive back Devin McCourty.

Narduzzi’s comments, though pointed, reflect the broader sense of awe—and anxiety—sweeping through the ACC coaching ranks. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney reportedly told boosters in May that “the conference just got more dangerous,” while Miami’s Mario Cristobal joked that Belichick’s presence made him consider “dusting off a few old Dolphins playbooks.”
But is the hype justified?
UNC went 9-4 last year, stumbling in big games and finishing outside the CFP conversation. But with Belichick now orchestrating every detail—from third-down efficiency to the special teams’ cadence—the Tar Heels have become the odds-on favorite to win the ACC Coastal. Vegas sportsbooks have UNC at +180 to win the conference, just behind Clemson.
Still, Narduzzi isn’t handing them the crown. “We’re coming for them,” he said. “I respect the hoodie, but this is college ball. It’s different.”
Whether North Carolina lives up to the hype or collapses under its own expectations, one thing is clear: with Bill Belichick stalking the sidelines in Carolina blue, the ACC just became the most fascinating battleground in college football.
