West Virginia Tech Softball Soars to No. 1 in the Nation for the First Time Ever
In a season destined for the record books, the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears softball team has made program history by climbing to the No. 1 spot in the national rankings for the first time ever. Powered by dominant performances, relentless determination, and a team-first mentality, the Golden Bears have taken the NAIA by storm—capturing attention and respect across the country.
Under the leadership of Head Coach Angela Morris, now in her sixth year at the helm, the team has strung together a jaw-dropping 28-game winning streak, outscoring opponents by a combined 212-47 during the run. The Golden Bears’ balanced attack has proven too much for rival programs, boasting one of the most complete rosters in recent memory.
At the heart of their success lies junior pitcher Kayla Trent, whose ERA has plummeted to an astonishing 0.84 over 145 innings pitched. Trent, a transfer from a Division I program, has not only thrown four no-hitters this season but has also struck out 186 batters while issuing just 19 walks. Her command, velocity, and poise under pressure have made her virtually unhittable.
Complementing the pitching staff is a potent offensive lineup led by senior captain and shortstop, Elena Garcia. Hitting .436 with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs, Garcia has anchored the lineup with consistency and power. Her leadership has been instrumental in the team’s mental fortitude, helping maintain focus during high-stakes games.
Freshman sensation Mia Colton has also been a revelation, batting .402 in her debut season with a team-high 18 stolen bases. Her speed and agility on the basepaths have given the Golden Bears an added dimension, disrupting pitchers and creating scoring opportunities.
West Virginia Tech’s defense has been airtight as well, committing the fewest errors in their conference. Behind the plate, catcher Lindsey Voss has thrown out 68% of would-be base stealers while calling nearly every pitch for the starting rotation.
The Golden Bears’ ascent to the top spot comes after a statement sweep of then-No. 2-ranked Southeastern University. In front of a raucous home crowd, Tech held Southeastern to just two total runs over three games, solidifying their position as the new standard in NAIA softball.
Coach Morris praised the team’s unity and resilience: “This group believes in each other. We’ve had injuries, tough games, long road trips—but they never waver. They show up every day with a hunger to get better.”
With the postseason fast approaching, all eyes are now on West Virginia Tech to see if their historic rise will culminate in a national championship. Regardless of the outcome, this season has already secured a legacy—the season the Golden Bears became No. 1 and proved they belong at the top.
