West Virginia Tech Softball Makes Historic Leap to No. 1 in National Rankings
In an unprecedented milestone for the program, West Virginia Tech’s softball team has surged to the No. 1 spot in the national rankings, rewriting the history books with an extraordinary blend of talent, teamwork, and tenacity. This marks the first time in school history that the Golden Bears have clinched the top national ranking, following a blistering stretch of wins that left fans, analysts, and opponents in awe.
The 2025 season has been nothing short of magical for the Golden Bears, who now boast a 38-2 record, including a staggering 22-game winning streak. The run has been defined by dominant pitching, clutch hitting, and an unshakable team chemistry that has propelled them to the top of the NAIA polls.
Leading the charge is senior pitcher and All-American frontrunner, Marissa Cole. The right-hander has struck out 217 batters in just 142 innings, posting a minuscule 0.82 ERA. Her poise under pressure and pinpoint control have made her virtually untouchable. In a recent showdown against perennial powerhouse Campbellsville, Cole tossed a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts, solidifying her status as one of the most dominant arms in the country.
Offensively, the Golden Bears have been equally relentless. Sophomore slugger Alyssa Nunez, currently batting .426 with 12 home runs and 49 RBIs, anchors a lineup that has outscored opponents 196-43 during their winning streak. Speedy leadoff hitter Jasmine Torres has stolen 29 bases and scored 51 runs, igniting rallies and setting the tone from the first pitch.
Head Coach Dana Whitmore, now in her sixth year at the helm, attributes the team’s success to a culture of accountability and resilience. “We’re not just chasing wins—we’re chasing excellence,” Whitmore said. “Every athlete on this team knows their role and executes with heart and purpose. This No. 1 ranking is a reflection of their belief in each other.”
The Golden Bears’ rise has also galvanized the West Virginia Tech community. Home games at the Montgomery Sports Complex have drawn record crowds, with fans packing the stands, waving blue-and-gold banners, and chanting the team’s new rallying cry: “Bear the Standard!”
With the postseason looming, the Golden Bears show no signs of slowing down. Eyes are now set on an NAIA World Series title—a crowning achievement that would cap off their meteoric season. But as Whitmore reminds her squad, the job isn’t finished.
“We respect the ranking, but we’re not satisfied with it,” she said. “This is just one step. Our mission is to bring a national championship home to West Virginia Tech.”
