In a move that stunned the sports world and electrified Auburn University fans, NBA Hall of Famer and Auburn alumnus Charles Barkley announced the donation of his entire reported $20.2 million fortune to Tigers basketball coach Bruce Pearl for the construction of a new, state-of-the-art basketball stadium on campus.
The emotional declaration came during a packed press conference held at Auburn Arena, where Barkley—donning his iconic No. 34 jersey—stepped to the podium beside Coach Pearl and university officials.
“I’m not taking any of this with me,” Barkley said, his voice thick with emotion. “Auburn gave me everything—my education, my platform, my pride. This program, this school, these people—they made me who I am. That’s why I’m giving everything I’ve got to ensure Auburn basketball reaches heights it’s never seen before.”
The $20.2 million donation, the largest single contribution by an alumnus in Auburn University history, will serve as the foundation for the construction of the “Barkley-Pearl Coliseum,” a cutting-edge, 14,000-seat basketball arena designed to rival the best in the SEC and beyond. Slated to break ground in early 2026, the stadium will feature luxury suites, student-centric seating, interactive digital experiences, and a museum dedicated to Auburn basketball history—with an entire wing honoring Barkley himself.
Coach Bruce Pearl, visibly moved, stood shoulder to shoulder with Barkley as the announcement was made.
“Charles is Auburn,” Pearl said. “This isn’t just about bricks and mortar. This is about legacy. This is about a man who never forgot where he came from. With this gift, he’s giving generations of Tigers something to believe in, something to be proud of.”
