SHE’S BACK: Nebraska Native, Former International Pro Marissa Kastanek Joins Husker Women’s Basketball Staff
LINCOLN, NE — In a move that electrifies both alumni and fans, the University of Nebraska has officially announced that former international professional basketball standout and Nebraska native Marissa Kastanek is joining the Huskers Women’s Basketball staff. Returning home with a decade of global experience, Kastanek brings a rich blend of leadership, tactical insight, and homegrown pride to the program.
Kastanek, who starred at Lincoln Southeast High School, carved her name into Nebraska hoops history long before going pro. A fierce competitor and a dynamic scorer, she left her mark on the local scene before heading to NC State, where she was a four-year starter for the Wolfpack and earned All-ACC honors. Her collegiate success propelled her into a professional career that spanned Europe—playing in Poland, Germany, and Italy—where she became known for her perimeter shooting, defensive tenacity, and on-court leadership.
Now, she’s back where it all began.
“This is more than just a coaching move—it’s a homecoming,” said Huskers Head Coach Amy Williams. “Marissa brings not only elite basketball knowledge but also a deep understanding of what it means to wear Nebraska red. Her journey is inspiring, and her presence will elevate everything we do.”
Kastanek’s return to Lincoln is both a personal and strategic decision. After retiring from pro ball in 2022, she began focusing on coaching development, working with youth academies in Europe before completing a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association internship in the U.S. Her growing reputation as a mentor, especially for guards, made her a natural fit for the Huskers’ evolving roster.
As an assistant coach, Kastanek is expected to focus on player development, particularly in the backcourt, as well as assist with international recruiting and game scouting. Her global network and bilingual fluency give Nebraska a unique edge in attracting diverse talent.
“I’m honored to come home and contribute to a program I’ve admired since childhood,” Kastanek said in a press release. “Nebraska basketball shaped who I am. It feels right to give back now, to help mold the next generation of athletes here.”
