CONGRATULATIONS – In a resounding victory that celebrates a remarkable turnaround season, Texas Aggies head football coach Mike Elko has been named Coach of the Year for the 2025 NCAA season.
In what will be remembered as one of the most extraordinary coaching feats in recent college football history, Mike Elko revitalized the Texas A&M football program and led the Aggies to an 11–2 record, clinching the SEC Championship for the first time since joining the conference in 2012. Once regarded as an underperforming team with a history of inconsistency in the high-stakes Southeastern Conference, the Aggies now stand as a model of resilience, discipline, and tactical brilliance under Elko’s leadership.
The turnaround began in earnest during spring camp, where Elko implemented a no-nonsense culture focused on fundamentals, accountability, and mental toughness. His emphasis on defensive tenacity, a trademark from his coordinator days, transformed a struggling unit into one of the most feared defenses in the country. The Aggies ranked top five nationally in sacks, takeaways, and red-zone defense.
Equally transformative was Elko’s approach to quarterback development. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Granger, once considered a backup prospect, flourished under Elko’s guidance and the retooled offensive scheme designed by new offensive coordinator Marcus Tatum. Granger threw for over 3,600 yards and 29 touchdowns while adding 600 yards on the ground, earning him a spot as a Heisman finalist.
Perhaps more impressive than the numbers was the grit displayed throughout the season. The Aggies mounted second-half comebacks in four separate games, including a stunning 28–27 victory over Alabama in Tuscaloosa and a double-overtime thriller against LSU that clinched their spot in the SEC title game. Against Georgia in the championship, Elko’s game plan was a masterpiece of misdirection and controlled aggression, resulting in a 31–21 win that stunned the college football world.
Off the field, Elko reinvigorated the 12th Man spirit, restoring trust among alumni, boosters, and students. His open-door policy with players and his emphasis on academic discipline have led to the highest team GPA in over a decade. “This honor isn’t just about me,” Elko said during the award ceremony in Dallas. “It’s about a team that believed in itself, a staff that worked tirelessly, and a university that never stopped dreaming big.”
The Coach of the Year award caps a storybook season, but Elko remains focused on the future. With a top-3 recruiting class incoming and most of the starting lineup returning, Texas A&M is poised not just for continued success—but for national dominance.
