Provo, Utah – In a momentous announcement that has sent ripples of excitement through the college football world and beyond, Brigham Young University (BYU) has confirmed that its acclaimed marching band, long celebrated as “The Best Damn Band in the Land,” has been selected to perform during the halftime show of Super Bowl LIX, set to take place in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The announcement, made by the National Football League (NFL) and BYU President C. Shane Reese in a joint press conference, marks the first time in Super Bowl history that a collegiate marching band will serve as the primary halftime entertainment, a role traditionally reserved for A-list pop and rock performers. The decision, reportedly driven by the NFL’s renewed initiative to spotlight diverse and authentic American performance arts, has stirred nationwide enthusiasm and pride, particularly among BYU alumni and supporters of college marching bands across the country.
Founded in 1901, the BYU Marching Band—officially known as the Cougar Marching Band—has long been a staple of school spirit and musical excellence at Cougar football games. Their moniker, “The Best Damn Band in the Land,” while controversial to some, has been earned through decades of precision performances, innovative arrangements, and a consistently electrifying field presence. In recent years, the band has drawn viral attention for its creative halftime shows, which have included tributes to cinematic soundtracks, elaborate marching formations of pixelated video game characters, and live musical collaborations with guest performers.
Super Bowl organizers have revealed that the upcoming halftime performance will span 14 minutes and include a thematic medley titled “American Odyssey: A Sonic Journey.” This ambitious set will feature original arrangements blending traditional marching cadences with iconic themes from American history, pop culture, and contemporary hits. The performance will involve over 250 student musicians, dancers, and color guard members, with guest appearances by notable BYU alumni in the music industry. Custom uniforms and LED-embedded instruments are also being designed specifically for the event.
Band Director Fred McInerney, who took over leadership of the Cougar Marching Band in 2017, called the selection “an extraordinary honor that speaks to the talent, dedication, and creativity of our students.” He added, “To be the first university ensemble to headline the Super Bowl halftime show is a moment of history—and we plan to make it unforgettable.”
Preparation for the show has already begun. Students returned early from winter break and have been rehearsing daily in the LaVell Edwards Stadium, braving snow and cold temperatures. The university has also launched a special behind-the-scenes documentary series titled Road to the 50-Yard Line, chronicling the band’s journey to the big stage.
