Cody Zeller is returning to where it all began—Bloomington, Indiana. In a move that electrified Hoosier Nation, Indiana men’s basketball head coach Darian DeVries announced the hiring of Zeller as an assistant coach. A former IU star and 2011 Indiana Mr. Basketball, Zeller brings a unique blend of collegiate greatness and NBA experience to a program aiming to restore its national prominence.
“It’s really special to welcome Cody Zeller back to Bloomington as a member of our coaching staff,” said DeVries in an official statement. “He has been involved in some of the biggest wins in program history, and he will be a great presence in our locker room, on the practice floor, and in the development of our players.”
Zeller, now 32, returns to Assembly Hall nearly a decade after leading the Hoosiers to a No. 1 national ranking and a memorable Sweet Sixteen run in 2013. Known for his intelligence, versatility, and leadership, Zeller was a cornerstone of Indiana’s resurgence under then-head coach Tom Crean. During his two seasons in Bloomington, he averaged 16.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, earning All-Big Ten honors and All-American recognition.
Selected fourth overall in the 2013 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Bobcats (now Hornets), Zeller went on to play 10 seasons in the NBA, including stints with the Portland Trail Blazers, Miami Heat, and New Orleans Pelicans. He was widely respected for his professionalism, basketball IQ, and team-first attitude, traits that now transition seamlessly into his coaching role.
The decision to bring Zeller on staff signals a deepening of DeVries’ vision for blending tradition with innovation.
