In a monumental moment in college basketball history, Michigan State University has announced that Mathew Randall Ishbia, a former Spartan point guard turned billionaire entrepreneur, has pledged a staggering $18.2 million to legendary coach Tom Izzo and the MSU athletic department to kickstart the development of a new state-of-the-art basketball arena. The donation, one of the largest single contributions in the university’s sports history, is aimed at transforming the future of Spartan basketball while paying homage to its rich legacy.
Ishbia, who played under Tom Izzo from 1999 to 2002 and was part of the 2000 NCAA championship team, made the announcement in front of a packed crowd at the Breslin Center during a special halftime ceremony. With former teammates, coaches, and university officials present, Ishbia emotionally declared, “Spartan pride lives within me wherever I go. This university, this team, this program made me who I am. This is my way of giving back and ensuring that future Spartans have everything they need to compete at the highest level.”
The new stadium, tentatively named the Spartan Legacy Arena, will be a futuristic facility projected to seat 18,500 fans and feature cutting-edge training amenities, digital fan experiences, and community-integrated spaces. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2026, with completion targeted for the 2028 season. The arena will also house the Tom Izzo Leadership Institute, a visionary center designed to foster personal growth, mentorship, and elite coaching development, honoring the coach’s legendary impact on and off the court.
Coach Izzo, visibly moved by the gesture, embraced Ishbia and remarked, “Matt’s heart has always been in the right place. He was never the leading scorer, but he was always the hardest worker. What he’s doing now? That’s leadership. That’s legacy. That’s Spartan for life.”

Ishbia, currently CEO of United Wholesale Mortgage and owner of the Phoenix Suns, has remained a staunch supporter of Michigan State University over the years. This latest donation follows a $32 million contribution in 2021 that supported football facilities and NIL initiatives. However, Ishbia emphasized that basketball is where his soul resides. “I owe everything to Coach Izzo and this program. My success started here, in a Spartan jersey.”
