The Kentucky Wildcats football program has officially announced the hiring of L’Damian Washington as their new wide receivers coach. A dynamic young coach with a reputation for success and perseverance, Washington arrives in Lexington after a standout tenure at the University of South Florida (USF).
Coach Stoops Welcomes Washington
Head coach Mark Stoops expressed excitement about the addition, emphasizing Washington’s unique qualifications and personal story.
“We are very excited to add L’Damian to our staff,” Stoops stated in a press release. “I’ve known about him for years since he coached my nephew, Drake Stoops, at Oklahoma. He’s young, energetic, and has a coaching style that resonates with players. His incredible journey of overcoming adversity is inspiring, and I believe he will be an excellent addition to our team.”
Washington’s Journey to Kentucky
At just 33 years old, Washington has already made a significant impact in college football. He spent the last two seasons at USF, where he served as the wide receivers coach in 2023 and added the role of passing game coordinator in 2024. Under his guidance, the Bulls produced record-setting offensive performances and saw significant player development.
One of Washington’s standout pupils was Sean Atkins, who became USF’s first 1,000-yard receiver in program history in 2023, earning All-AAC honors. Atkins also broke the school’s career receptions record and consistently ranked among the most productive receivers in the nation under Washington’s tutelage.
In his first year at USF, Washington played a key role in the team’s remarkable six-win improvement, capped by a dominant 45-0 victory over Syracuse in the Boca Raton Bowl. That season, USF’s offense ranked 17th nationally in total yards, showcasing Washington’s ability to elevate a program’s offensive firepower.
Before USF, Washington honed his skills at Oklahoma in 2022, where he worked with a high-powered offense that averaged nearly 33 points per game. His work with Marvin Mims Jr., now a star with the Denver Broncos, further established his reputation as a coach who develops elite talent.
A Proven Leader with Deep Roots in the Game
Washington’s coaching journey began at his alma mater, Missouri, where he served as director of player development in 2020. His playing career at Mizzou from 2009-2013 was equally impressive, highlighted by 100 career receptions for 1,735 yards and 15 touchdowns. As a senior, he recorded 50 catches for 893 yards and 10 touchdowns, helping lead the Tigers to an SEC East Championship.
Washington’s resilience off the field is equally compelling. Orphaned by the age of 15, he overcame immense personal adversity to become a collegiate standout and an NFL player. His story has made him a sought-after motivational speaker, inspiring others with his perseverance and determination.
Building Kentucky’s Wide Receiver Corps
Washington expressed his enthusiasm about joining the Wildcats, crediting his relationship with Stoops and offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan as key factors in his decision.
