The racing community is mourning the loss of a true legend this week.
One of the greatest dirt track drivers in history, Scott Bloomquist, tragically died in a solo plane crash at his family’s farm in Tennessee. Bloomquist, who was just 60 years old, passed away on Friday, according to reports.
“Scott Bloomquist’s legendary status was not only defined by his numerous victories on the track but also by his groundbreaking innovations within the dirt late model industry,” said Brian Carter, CEO of the World Racing Group. “He played a pivotal role in shaping DIRTcar Racing and the World of Outlaws, significantly contributing to the resurgence of the World of Outlaws Late Models and its growth into what it is today. His influence extended beyond the racetrack, affecting the evolution of both tracks and chassis design. Bloomquist’s passion for racing and his innovative mind will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.”
Tributes to Bloomquist have been pouring in from across the racing world, with many sharing their grief and admiration for the late driver. Among those deeply affected by the loss is legendary NASCAR star Tony Stewart.
Stewart, reflecting on Bloomquist’s unique contributions to the sport, described him as “one of a kind.”
“Scott Bloomquist was truly one of a kind, and he’s probably the smartest guy I’ve ever been around in the world of dirt racing,” Stewart said. “His talent behind the wheel was unparalleled, but what really set him apart was the ingenuity he brought to building his racecars. He was a dominant force both on and off the track, with a larger-than-life personality that matched his impressive list of accomplishments. Dirt racing is better because of him, and his presence will be sorely missed.”
