WVU Athletics: Beyond Football and Basketball
Football and basketball often dominate the spotlight for WVU Athletics, but fans can enjoy a variety of other sports. Here are some highlights and how you can catch these teams in action.
Swim and Dive
Unique with a season spanning from September to March, the swim and dive teams compete at the Aquatic Center at Mylan Park. This season, both the men’s and women’s teams shattered multiple program records at the Big 12 Championships in Morgantown. Several Mountaineers also qualified for the NCAA Championships and the 2024 Paris Olympic Trials.
Gymnastics
The women’s gymnastics team ended the 2024 season with an 8-15 record, placing fifth at the Big 12 Championship in Norman, Oklahoma. Senior Kiana Lewis earned a bronze medal on the vault, a career-high. Fans can support the team from January to March at the WVU Coliseum or on ESPN+.
Wrestling
Ranked No. 19 in the final NWCA Coach’s Poll, the wrestling team finished the season with a 10-5 record. For the first time since 2011-12, they sent over half their starting lineup to the national tournament in back-to-back seasons. Freshman Ty Watters and senior Peyton Hall earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships. Students can attend matches for free at the WVU Coliseum, while non-students can purchase tickets at WVUGAME.com.
Track and Field
With indoor and outdoor seasons from December through June, the track and field team competes at the Track and Field Complex at Mylan Park. At the Mountaineer Twilight, redshirt sophomore Zara Zervos set a personal record in the 1,500-meter race, and the team won three gold medals. Redshirt junior Cassandra Williams also performed well at the Virginia Challenge.
Tennis
The WVU Tennis team, led by head coach Miha Lisac, achieved a 14-12 record, their best under Lisac. Matches are held at Summit Tennis Academy or Mountaineer Tennis Courts, depending on the weather. The main season occurs in the spring, with home matches often scheduled on Fridays and Sundays.
Rifle
The most successful sports program at WVU, the rifle team boasts 19 NCAA Championships. Competing through fall and winter, home events are held at the WVU Rifle Range and the Shell Building. Last season, the team finished second in the NCAA Championship under Head Coach Jon Hammond. The co-ed team competes in the Great American Rifle Conference.
