The New York Jets are entering a critical 2024 NFL season, facing a pivotal moment after their significant acquisition of Aaron Rodgers last offseason. Unfortunately, Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles, raising questions about the longevity of their championship window.
Given the uncertainty surrounding Rodgers’ future, the Jets may soon need to consider their long-term quarterback strategy. Looking ahead to the 2025 NFL offseason, New York might seek a young quarterback to develop as Rodgers’ eventual successor.
ESPN NFL Draft expert Matt Miller has predicted that the Jets will target a quarterback in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Specifically, he envisions New York selecting Notre Dame standout Riley Leonard.
“Aaron Rodgers is turning 41 years old this season and will be coming off a torn Achilles. Sure, he might play several more seasons, but the Jets still have to think long-term about the roster. That means being prepared for his eventual exit. Leonard, a transfer from Duke, has been talked about by scouts for two seasons as a potential first-rounder. He played in seven games last season, missing time with ankle and toe injuries, and he struggled with just three touchdown passes and three interceptions. But the accuracy, mobility, and decision-making he showed in 2022 have scouts believing he’s ready to break out in a new scheme.”
Leonard has been an underrated college quarterback, having played his career to this point with the Duke Blue Devils. His move to Notre Dame will place him on a larger national stage, providing him with a stronger supporting cast and the opportunity to improve his draft stock in 2024.
During the 2023 season at Duke, Leonard played in seven games while dealing with injuries. He completed 56.7% of his passes for 1,102 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. In 2022, he showcased his potential by completing 63.9% of his passes for 2,967 yards, 20 touchdowns, and six interceptions, while also rushing for 699 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Leonard’s potential as a future franchise quarterback remains uncertain, but his development and a strong 2024 season with the Fighting Irish could solidify his status as a first-round pick.
The Jets’ approach will largely depend on Rodgers’ performance in 2024 and the team’s overall direction. If they decide to invest in a young quarterback like Leonard, it could signal their commitment to a seamless transition for their quarterback position in the years to come.
