Caitlin Clark’s Efficient Night Not Enough as Fever Fall to Storm
Caitlin Clark delivered one of her more efficient performances as a professional, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win for the Indiana Fever. The No. 1 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft scored 15 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out seven assists, and recorded a block in the Fever’s 89-77 loss to the Seattle Storm on Thursday night. Despite shooting 4-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and hitting 4-of-5 free throws, Clark and the Fever couldn’t overcome Seattle, marking their third defeat to the Storm this season.
Jewell Loyd led the Storm with an impressive 34 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 6-of-9 from three-point range. Nneka Ogwumike added a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, also contributing three blocks and three steals.
Clark’s frustration was evident, especially after committing six turnovers. The night started with a scare as she drove the lane early in the game, only to have her left knee buckle, causing her to land awkwardly. Grimacing in pain, Clark flexed her leg repeatedly but waved off Indiana coach Christie Sides’ attempt to substitute her out of the game.
Known for her resilience, Clark played every game during her college career, often pushing through injuries and illness. She has spoken about her dedication to playing for the fans, and Thursday’s game at a sold-out Climate Pledge Arena was no exception. The crowd included notable figures such as Storm legend Sue Bird, USWNT star Megan Rapinoe, and Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard.
Clark’s history at Climate Pledge Arena is notable. As a junior in college, she scored 31 points in the Sweet 16 and dominated in the Elite Eight against Louisville with 41 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists, leading Iowa to the 2023 Final Four. Earlier this season, she posted 21 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists in Seattle.
Thursday’s game was the first of a three-game road trip for Indiana and Clark. They will face the Phoenix Mercury next Thursday, followed by a matchup against the two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces on July 2.
