New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll took to the podium on Tuesday, announcing that the Tommy Cutlets era will continue for at least one more week. Per NFL columnist Pat Leonard, Daboll has named rookie quarterback Tommy DeVito as the starter in Week 14, despite the team designating veteran signal-caller Tyrod Taylor to return from the injured reserve (IR) earlier this week.
DeVito, the third-string QB to open the season, took over as the starter in Week 9 after franchise cornerstone Daniel Jones went down with a torn ACL.
DeVito has played in five games this season, throwing for 697 yards and seven scores against three picks. He has also added 83 rushing yards and a touchdown. The 25-year-old has played well over his team’s last two games, throwing four touchdowns against no picks during that span. Additionally, the Giants are 2-1 with DeVito under center.
The undrafted rookie played his final college season with the Illinois Fighting Illini, tossing 15 touchdowns with four picks. DeVito played for the Syracuse Orange from 2018 to 2021, accounting for 28 passing touchdowns against 12 picks.
Longtime journeyman quarterback Tyrod Taylor will play behind Tommy DeVito on Sunday. The Virginia Tech product has made three starts this season but suffered a rim injury in late October, landing him on the IR. However, the Giants designated the 34-year-old to return from the IR earlier this week, suggesting he could have returned to a starting role in Week 14. Taylor will slot behind Devito on Monday if the team activates him onto the 53-man roster. Jacob Eason would play the backup role if Taylor can’t go.
